John Farquharson c 1712 m Anna Farquharson of Achriachan (FG). Duff House MS 3175 Bundle LXV K27 for 1738 shows a John Farqson as tenant Newtown in Invernettie. Is this him living next to his brother below? He was a Captain under Farquharson of Monaltrie at Culloden (Muster Roll of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's Army), and taken prisoner but escaped to France (FG). His writings feature in vol 3 of the 'The Lyon in Mourning' published by the Scottish History Society and in John Prebble's 'Culloden'. See Note 1 below. |
||
|
William Farquharson (cont'd below) born about 1713 m 1735 Jochebed Allanach. William was omitted from the Broudearg manuscript of 1737. FG suggests this may have occurred because he was the only Protestant member of his family. Duff House MS 3175 Bundle LXV K27 for 1738 shows a William Farqson as tenant in half of Torrancroy in Invernettie. Is this him? |

| The Brouchdearg manuscript states that Roderick and Diana had three daughters, but the baptism of their third daughter does not appear in the OPR, which is blank after 1715. If this daughter was born about 1720 and was Margaret Farquharson who married James McHardy in 1753, this would explain the naming of Diana McHardy | ||
| After Diana Forbes' death, Roderick married the daughter of James Forbes in Millhead and by 1733 they had two sons and three daughters (FG): second son would be David (Glenbucket OPR 1732) | ||

and this Robert's son Robert b 1783,
manufacturer in Paisley, succeeded to Allargue (FG Note 44). The youngest daughter Jean b 1761 of Robert Farquharson and Jean Grant (FG
Note 44) was notable for securing £2,000 (reduced on appeal to £750)
damages for seduction against Alexander Anderson of Candacraig in a case
which lasted from 1794 until 1804 (History Today, April 2000, page 24). So was she Miss Farquharson of Allargue who died in Dec 1851 in her 91st year (Aberdeen Obituaries) |

| Notes on Table 1 | |
| Note 1 John Farquharson (Jacobite) |
Vol 3 of 'The Lyon in Mourning 1746-75' (Scottish History Society First Series vol 22) includes a lurid account of the cruelties experienced by the prisoners taken at Culloden over the pseudonym Brutus Scotorum, which is reliably attributed to this John Farquharson of Aldlerg. This account is drawn upon by John Prebble in his well known book 'Culloden'. 'The Lyon in Mourning' also includes gossipy correspondence over the period 1767 to 1775 between Robert Forbes, Bishop of Ross and Caithness, and John Farquharson, then in Dunkergue, with news of 'your old friend and mine Charles Jamieson'. |
| Note 2 Alexr Forbes of Culquharrie |
Alexander Forbes of Culquharrie was descended from Malcolm Forbes, natural son of Sir John Forbes with the black lip (Cess Roll 1667). Alexander by disposition in 1683 bound his heirs to [make wadset payments] to Margaret, Ann and Helen Forbes his sixth, seventh and eighth daughters (AU MS 3402/20): this refers also (in 1737) to Kenneth Catenach in Kirktown of Strathdon eldest son of John Cattenach in Toldochul deceased and Isobel Forbes deceased daughter of Alexander Forbes above. |
| Note 3 Gustavus Farquharson |
Gustavus appears in 1722 in the Heritors' Records of Strathdon (NAS HR 733/6) responsible with Robert Farquharson, probably as wadsetters, for a share of the Minister's stipend in respect of Easterton (later known as Cottown or Cotterton) and Blewfold in Culquhary - south of the Don downsteam of the kirk. He is shown in 1751 in the Rental of the Lands of New, Culquhary and Tollaskinch (Aberdeen University Historic Collections MS 2769/I/17/Box 2) as tenant of Coat-town (later Cottown) in Culquhary. [Charles Christie, in 'Stray Memories of Strathdon', stated that Culquhary was recognisable only by 12 plane trees in Nether Haugh.] Also in MS 2769/I/17/Box 2, he appears as joint valuer of the Bigging of the Lands of New etc 'Appreciate by Gustavus Farquharson, John Michie in Coul & John Michie in Little Tollahespic upon 23rd of May 1751' |
| Note 4 Roderick Farquharson |
Roderick appears in 1722 in the Heritors' Records of Strathdon (NAS HR 733/6) responsible with Robert Farquharson, probably as wadsetters, for a share of the Minister's stipend in respect of Brux (ie Brughs - south of the Don just upstream of the kirk). He is shown in 1751 in the Rental of the Lands of New, Culquhary and Tollaskinch (as above) as tenant of Brux. He does not appear in 1755. |
| Table 2 | Children | and Grandchildren of |
| William Farquharson (above), born in 1713 or 1714, married July 1735 Jochebed Allanach, daughter of Alex Allanach and according to Farquharson Genealogies his sons were as follows. In 1768 Alexander McHardy in Tolduquhill in his will settled an account of 3s-9d sterling due to William Farqson in Achearnach [Auchernach]. Presumably this was due to this William or his son below. | ||

This refers to 'Job's Hill' as an estate at St. Mary's in Jamaica that belonged to a Walter Hyslop who died in 1824. Job's Hill then appears to have been owned by John Farquharson who had 672 slaves (or 672 acres or both). |

| Note 1 |
Alexander Farquharson in Belnaglack, Glenbucket |
In Duff House Papers ( Aberdeen University MS 3175/ 1472/1) James Stuart reports to the Earl of Fife in 1788 that 'Belnaglack being eight oxgates land and possessed by Germ Ritchie and his two sons in law Alexr Farquharson & William Brodie, William Brodie possesses three oxgates and Germ Ritchie the fourth. William Brodie was [designed] at the setting of the tack in [Whit] 1782 to get Germ's oxgate at his death and then they would both possess alike. I believe their abilities are much the same, they are both due rent 1787, if any difference Alexander Farquharson is the most substantial.' In the margin the Earl responds that what was designed should be implemented - once rents for 1787 have been paid. |
| Note 2 |
William Farquharson |
The death certificate of Robert Farquharson in Tolduquhill who died in 1859 and was buried near to Strathdon kirk showed his parents to be William Farquharson and Cicilia Farquharson ms Forbes. Presumably this William is his father? Also Cecil[ia] Farquharson, female of 80, appears in the 1841 census in the family of Charles Farquharson above. Where did the name Cecilia come from? Note that the daughters of John Gordon of Glenbucket included Clementina, Henrietta and Cecilia. [Selection of Scottish Forfeited Estates Papers page 178 Scottish History Society 1909] |
| Note 3 | Charles Farquharson | This looks like Charles Farquharson married to Margaret Forbes who was at Tolduquhill when their fifth child Robert was baptised on 28 July 1831. Fourth child Peter m Mary Cameron died in Aberdeen in 1869 aged 38 (death certificate found by Deb O'Reilly). In the 1841 census Charles Farquharson agricultural labourer aged 45 plus and wife Margaret aged 45 plus were at East Aldhie with sons Robert 8 Alexander 6 John 4 and female Cecilia? aged 80 . In 1851 Charles Farquharson agricultural labourer aged 60 was at Corrybreck with wife Margaret aged 59 and children Mary 24 and John 13. He died widower aged 82 at Nether Tolduquhill on 8 Aug 1873, father William Farquharson deceased, mother Cecil [sic] Forbes deceased, death reported by Robert Farquharson Edinglassie. |

| Note 1 |
James Farquharson appears in Drumanettie in the 1825 membership list of the Lonach Society, and in Lost in a list of reek hens in 1833, but not again. From the naming pattern of his family, he looks like a brother of Robert Farquharson, son of William Farquharson and Cecilia Forbes and grandson of William Farquharson (Table 3 above). |
|
| Note 2 |
In 1847 Isobel Davidson appears in a Poors List at Ledmacaie. In the 1851 census inhabitants of Ledmacay include 'Elizabeth' (a name sometimes regarded as equivalent to Isabel) Farquharson widow aged 67 born in Coldstone and her daughter Mary aged 43 born in Strathdon (and four grandchildren with assorted surnames). Parents of Isobel Davidson appear to be Peter Davidson and Christian Forbes m Logie Coldstone 1775. |
