Grassicks

Much of this information came from Suzanne Walker whose web site provides extra detail.

le 1 James Grassick m Jane Forbes and their children and grandchildren
Unlike his daughter Margaret, who married George Beattie and emigrated to Canada, James Grassick was not a great traveller.  Born in Strathdon at the farm of Lost (visible in this picture through the gap in the wall), he brought up his family at the Coul of Ledmacay (in the immediate foreground) and spent his later years at Tamachleun and Park Villa (beyond the trees behind Lost, about as far again).

Glen Anderson's pictures of James Grassick and his wife Jane Forbes are now on Suzanne Walker's web site.

Notes
1 William Grassick in Tamachleun and Jane Downie in Lost had a second illegitimate son, Alexander, chr 14 Dec 1800.  Alexander's gravestone, next to James' in the Strathdon churchyard, is inscribed: 'To the memory of Alexander Grassick who died 27 January 1830 aged 28 years done by the care of his brother James Grassick in Coul of Ledmacaie'.  In addition, the OPR in 1806 shows  "1806 Aug 17 William Grassich in Tomachleun and ______ Dow Glenconry in fornication a son William".
2 Gravestone, Strathdon Cemetery: Erected by James Grassick farmer in Tomachleun in memory of his beloved wife Jane Forbes who died there 3 May 1865 aged 72 years and of their family James who died 14 May 1853 aged 29 years William on the 7 June [presumably 1853] aged 33 years and of Elizabeth Mary John & Helen who died in infancy. The above James Grassick who erected this stone died at Park Villa 22 Nov 1868.  Subnote:  Death record for Jane Forbes Grassick says she died Parkvilla, not Tomachleun (perhaps because Parkvilla was built on the land of the farm of Tomachleun - or Tamachleun).
3 Regarding the children of James Grassick - names are taken from gravestone of parents and from old parish records; there may be some duplication (e.g., John Grassick & John Farquharson Grassick).  This has been retained as it makes the number of children work (that Mary Ann is the 12th child per OPR).
4 Continuing the Tamachleun connection, William Edward, the father of Charles Edward was at one time a tenant there.  William came to Strathdon between 1808-1810.  He moved from Tamachleun to Belnagauld after 1822.  Charles's sister Helen married Donald Grassick of Easter ChapeltonFor more details click here

Notes
1 Samuel Grassick family was at Tamachleun at least from 1796-1803, the same time as William Grassick (see note 1, above).  They are having children during roughly the same duration, suggesting that the two men are not too far apart in age - possibly siblings?

Note: William Grassick, who in 1768 wrote the inventory of the goods of Alexander McHardy of Tolduguhill, appears in the records of the Scottish Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge (NAS GD 95/8 and 'SSPCK Schoolmasters 1709-1872' ed A S Cooper, Scottish Records Society 1997).  He was SSPCK schoolmaster in Strathdon at a salary of £12 a year at Torranbuie 1766-67, Lynorn 1767-70, Torrancroy 1770-79,  then variously attributed to Lynorn, Auchernach, Craiglea and Blairnamuick, and to Ardler, Kindyside from 1793 until superannuated in 1814 yet 'taught until a few days of his death in 1816'.
The Strathdon OPR at 6 Nov 1771 shows the baptism of a daughter Jean to Mr William Grassick in Torrancroy, and Suzanne Walker helpfully draws attention to a death registration in Aberdeen in 1864 for Mary Grassick aged 90, widow of William Spence Minister of Glenbucket, and daughter of  William Grassick. schoolmaster (deceased) and Jane Grassick ms Reid (deceased).
